Something for the weekend

This weekend Kingston Youth service are launching a consultation with young people on what additional facilities they would like to see available at the weekends. In Kingston we do are fortunate in having some facilities on Friday evenings and Saturdays, some of which are provided by voluntary sector, but depending on the outcome of the consultation we may be looking to increase this provision, and would therefore be grateful if you could encourage as many young people as possible to complete the questionnaire. The consultation will take place throughout July.

The questionnaire can be completed on line at

Cambridge is Coming.....

Four years ago we saw the departure of former Gap year worker Sylvester Liyanage to Ridley Hall in Cambridge. Now not only has Sylvester returned to curacy in Kingston, but now he is being followed by some former friends who are coming here to help us out!

Between Saturday March 28th and April 5th Oxygen in partnership with CMS & Christchurch New Malden are welcoming seven Ridley Hall ordinands are coming to spend a week involved with Oxygen, Street Pastors & the churches work with the homeless community. In addition to a range of local experiences the participating ordinands will have a chance to engage with a high quality teaching and seminar programme that will explore gospel & culture, cross cultural communication and global understandings of mission & evangelism.

Activities will include detached youthwork, after school clubs, homeless people lunches and walking the streets with Street Pastors Kingston. In addition to the practical activities there will be four teaching blocks during which the theology and practices of mission, evangelism and cross cultural communication will be explored. Time will also be spent with the leadership of Christchurch New Malden, understanding how they are seeking to do church for an emerging generation.

Please pray for the plans for this mission, pray for Christchurch, Oxygen and CMS leading this work
Pray also for the impact of this students, pray that they would help us move the work forward with Kingstons young people

Mentoring with Oxygen

We have confirmed the date for the latest rescheudled Oxygen mentoring training it will now take place on 18th April between 9 and 11.30am at thebasement, John Bunyan Church, Kingston. If you are interested in being a mentor either for Oxygen or your own church then this is an event you should consider being a part of.

The need for mentoring training has arisen because Oxygen is increasingly being approached about providing one to one support for some of RBK's young people. The young people we are being asked to meet with come with a wide range of needs, from simply wanting someone to talk to through to self harm and difficult home situations. In addition are aware that various churches across the Borough would like to offer mentoring to their own young people, looking to provide one to one support to members of their youthwork programmes.

With this in mind we have developed a new mentoring scheme that can run acorss Kingtston, with mentors providing support in and outside church. We have consolidated the mentoring training into one training session. During this active, packed session will give you an idea of the principles and practicalities of mentoring and as a result release you into mentoring in the future. We will also include prposals on how mentoring could be established in your own church context.

If you are interested in joining us for this session please let us know...

The Oxygen Showcase and Awards Evening

Over the last year Oxygen has come into contact with over 1,200 of Kingston Borough’s young people. Through projects such as Rm1, Urban Nites and ID, we have sought to serve and relate to a wide range of the Borough’s young people. During this time we have seen young people’s attitudes and actions transform dramatically as they have developed personally, socially and spiritually.

At this first ever Oxygen showcase and awards evening, something we hope will become an annual activity, we want to represent and celebrate these young people’s achievements. There will be displays of young people’s art and videos as well as performances from young bands and musicians who have been involved. We will be handing out awards to young people who have achieved and contributed significantly as well as to some long standing volunteers who have given much over the last year to the work of the trust. As this event doubles as our AGM we will be closing the event with a short presentation on the overall progress of the charity including the work of the associate projects of Street Pastors Kingston and Sacred Space as well as the strategic aims for 2009-10.

We hope that you will be able to join us for this event as it promises to be a celebration of young people’s achievements. However in order to help us with catering we would be grateful if you could rsvp to Sarah Parker, office manager on sarah.parker@oxygen-online.org or via 020 8547 0566

What is Rm1 in Korean?

Hi, I wanted to give you a quick update so you could pray for me. I am please to report that most of my projects are mostly fine. Further to the prayer request from a couple of weeks ago in Korean Club, I'm having a good relationship with those guys, and which is really great.

However this week the Korean work is set to grow as for in a new development I will begin work with Korean Boys who are attending in Coombe boy school. This is an exciting new focus for Oxygen’s Korean work, instead of working with young people after school, I am providing support to the Korean students around the school day – providing mentoring, support and help with their English. I also hope in time to be able to encourage them to come along to Rm1 and get to know us there. From there I hope over future weekend to run other events such as talent shows, basketball competitions and the alike.

So this is my prayer request for this week

Working with Korean young teenage boys is sometimes really difficult, they often are closed and don’t want to chat. Could you therefore pray for relationship between me and Korean guys.

Pray too for this new focus for Oxygen’s work, that it would grow, have a great impact and that many Korean teenagers, not just in Coombe Boys, but across the Borough would be able to be supported

ID Project @ Coombe Boys School

oxygennews

The ID Project at Coombe Boys works with young people whom the school feel would benefit from extra support and encouragement. Through games, art, discussion and play we aim to wor k with these young men to help them to discover more about who they are, where their skills and interests lie and encourage them to think about their futures.

We urgently require volunteers to join with staff from Oxygen to run this exciting project. Sessions take place on Thursday afternoons, 1-3pm. The first session is due to be Thurs 2nd Oct, running for 10 weeks with a break for half term. If you are interested in joining us, or know someone else who might then please get in contact with Kate Davies on 07846 215 289 or at kate.davies@oxygen-online.org.

Rm1 @ Coombe restarts

Rm1 restarts for its second year

On Monday 8th September Rm1 club @ Coombe Boys School restarts for its second year, running providing after school care for boys in year 7 and 8 until 5.30pm each evening. Building on the success of last year we start this September with sessions 80% filled, mostly with young people in the new year 7. I am looking forward to meeting and getting to know our new club members and welcoming back those returning as year 8 students. Please pray that relationships will be established quickly between the young people and the staff and that all will settle in quickly.

monday prayer mailings: 01 09 08

Given that I sent out a prayer mail last week (a few days early), today’s is quite short and to the point! The main focus is to say thank you for all those who prayed and passed on news of the need for one more Oxygen Gap Year Worker to join the team this week.

It seemed impossible that we would be able to find, interview, reference and appoint a worker all in the space of 24 hours, yet that is what happened on Friday last week. Within 24 hours of asking people to pray, we had been contacted by someone we already knew, who had a passion for youthwork, as well as a great testimony to share. She was available immediately, wanting to be involved and raring to go!

So as I close can first I thank you for praying, and then ask you to join with me in thanking God for bringing this, eighth Oxygen team together. If you get chance pray for them this morning as they meet up. They are: Rob, John (also known as Ki Hyoung), Andy, Seung Kwan, Anna, Ann, Leah & Katie. Also working with the team for the first time this year are Bex Murch (From Christchurch Surbiton) who is now working for the YMCA running Rm1 in Holyfield School, Nathan Larkin (from last year Gap Year Team), who is Christchurch New Malden’s External Youthworker & Wit Hong (from St Peters Norbiton) who is St Peters’ external youthworker.

Please also put the 20th Sept in your diaries as this will be the commissioning service for both the new and existing team members.

Thanks

Richard
