Christmas in Three Words

Hectic, expensive and full! I wonder if any these would ones you would choose if asked to describe Christmas in just three words. That was exactly the challenge that a team of Work Experience Students working at Oxygen were faced with in the last week. During their week they were set the challenge of conducting interviews to find out what the general public thought about Christmas.

The interesting results of this project they made into a short film which is only available through subscribing the Oxygen Podcast, visit www.oxygen-online.org/podcast

Sponsor a Rm1 Place

Rm1 is an exciting new project based at Coombe Boys' school. It provides a fun, engaging and safe space for young people in years 7&8 (ages 11-13) to attend up to 5 nights a week. Some of our young people are referred to us as they are vulnerable, at risk or have other special needs and would therefore benefit from extra support.

At Rm1 they are given a place to relax, undertake their homework as well engage in creative and participative activities alongside Oxygen Gap workers & volunteers. Activities include healthy eating, drama and craft workshops as well art and multimedia projects around themes such as love, forgiveness, hope and community action.

Oxygen wants to ensure that Rm1 focuses on the most at need, most at risk and most vulnerable young people. Our desire is that Rm1 is there for those who would most benefit from a safe place to go and safe people to meet after school.

We are looking for those who will join with us in supporting these young people by offering to pay for them to have a place at Rm1. Just £10 per month makes it possible for one young person to be able to attend one night a week. £60 per month would not only create a space for five nights but also enable Oxygen to provide other supportive and engaging activities during the school holidays.

Would you consider sponsoring a place at Rm1 By completing the enclosed standing order form and returning it to the Oxygen office (

Weeping and Hoping: Kingston Methodist Church

We all have lives that are a roller coaster ride of consciousness with both highs and lows. Times when we are weeping and times when we are hoping.

These attached notes are from the sermon I preached at Kingston Methodist Church. In particular looking at the wider world through the lens of youth culture, often the barometer of the wider society, I show that despite our relative material prosperity and comfort in this country we are still afflicted by 3 social conditions which are bringing people low. Primary amongst these are: Loneliness, Division, and Fear

This sermon draws on Hebrews 11 which catalogues heroes of the faith, people who know what is was to be worried, to be overwhelmed and to be brought to breaking point as well as Joshua 1 which details how, in the face of despair, Joshua remembers the promise of a new way of life that God has for His people.

Finally the sermon comes together to show that our calling as God’s new covenant people is to bring a vision of a new way of living to these people, bringing hoping where there is weeping. Pointing towards the joy where sorrow is overwhelming. Ours is not just a hope for church meetings, but is for everyone, it is a message of Hope for the World, bringing transformation and turning sorrow into joy.

WHO KILLED SANTA CLAUSE?

Tis the night before Christmas and all is not well. The elves are on strike, Rudolf's nose has lost its shinyness and to top it all the Grunch (Yes, the Grunch, not the Grinch) is plotting something very mischievous indeed. Everywhere Santa looks all he see's are cold eyes and no friendly faces. But who in their right minds would ever have expected the most horrendous of all deeds to occur? It is up to you and your fellow sleuths to discover the motives, interview the suspects and size up the evidence to finally prove once and for all...

WHO KILLED SANTA CLAUSE? St Peters Norbiton, December 15th 7pm Tickets are £12 a head, but only £9 for students or anyone in full time education. Alternatively if you are coming to this and the Oxygen Christmas Party on the 14th you can come to both for just £20. Try and get a table of 8 together, but if you can't dont worry, we should be able to stick you with people. Includes Fish and Chips (or sausage and chips or something vegetarian and chips) and desert, but bring your own drink. To book tickets call Tim Worth on 07817970959 or email me at Timworth89@aol.com

TGS Project – November 2007

It is just after 3.30pm, the girls have gone home and I collapse, drained on to the nearest chair.  ‘That was hard work.  I am shattered.’  Today I am reminded yet again of how broad and wide the description ‘vulnerable’ is.  The TGS Project was set up to build self esteem and confidence in girls who the school identify as vulnerable.

In the last couple of weeks the team have been challenged time and time again to remain cool calm and consistent in their response to a variety issues.  Nicole decided to take a piece of work from Susan and not give it back. One afternoon the theme was emotions.  How was I to know that 4 of the group had fallen out with each other and that the palpable of feeling of anger in the room was not going to lend itself to co operation of any kind?

Abbie wrote in bold letters ‘I hate myself’ and Caroline said ‘I’m a nobody.  Everybody hates me.’

Each one of the girls has their own needs and today I’m wondering how the team and I are going to be able to make a difference to these girls lives.  How do we meet the needs of every girl not just the ones who are most vocal but those like Sophie or Christine who are very quiet?

  • It is on a day like this when it becomes very clear that I need a bigger team – more individual support for the girls.
  • It is on a day like this when I realise how much I need the help of God and the support of prayer.
  • It is on days like this when, in the middle of crisis, the girls turn round and ask, ‘Is this group going to run next year because we like coming.’

Then I know it’s worth it!

(not the real names of the girls)

Peace & Reconciliation at St Andrews & St Mark's Surbiton

I had a wonderful but moving time speaking at St Andrews & St Marks this weekend. It was of course Remembrance Sunday, and so a chance to look back at what to people who have made remarkable and inspirational sacrifices in the past in search of a fair and peaceful world. Preaching on such a day is a challenge because it means trying to balance respect with honour and appeal for people to be involved with a general information sharing time. I have included my notes from what I said in case anyone is interested.

Pakistan Update from Oxygen's Eric

With all the recent unrest in Pakistan our thoughts in Oxygen have been drawn to Eric Attique who worked for Oxygen between Oct 2006 and July 2008. Eric recently returned to Pakistan from where he sent this update on what is going on. Please uphold Eric and Pakistan in your prayers at this time.

Pakistan is an important participant of the coalition. Pakistan has always been and will remain to be against all forms of terrorism. The news about Emergency in Pakistan reached like wild fire in the entire world. According to Government of Pakistan, Emergency will remain in Pakistan as long as necessary. The Government of Pakistan is greatly concerned about the future of Pakistan and Pakistani president said he had declared the emergency to stop the country "committing suicide", because the country was in a crisis caused by militant violence and an unruly judiciary. Some people have got different opinions, and hardly believe the reason given to impose the emergency in Pakistan. The security problems in Pakistan are not since last week. Some people believe that the emergency rule is a very good thing. Some people refuse to understand what the country has been going through in the last year.

Young people are particularly affected by the many negative consequences happening since last year in the country. It is painful to see the present situation of Pakistan, its rather depressing. So many questions are running in youth’s mind, what will be the future of Pakistan? When people will be able to change their living standard? When we will be able to drive of safe and smooth roads? When we won’t see the traffic jams on streets? When this rough period will end? When we will be able to see the economical growth in Pakistan?

The Pakistani nation is in chaos and their anxiety is increasing constantly. Broadcasting of the private TV channels has not been permitted yet, and people are struggling to get news. Pakistanis living abroad are perhaps more aware about the present situation. Nobody likes emergency rule, but let’s face it, under these circumstances, that was the only option left. The Government of Pakistan gave freedom to media but some of the private channels have produced ill news just to attract the audience, and played a considerably vital role to establish this situation. Presidential elections, the case regarding Chief Justice (Supreme Court has also become a focus of opposition to the government), suicide bombing, political instability, corruption, disorder, and so many other factors also contributed a lot in this situation. USA will now review the hundreds of millions of dollars of aid given to Pakistan each year. The Government of Pakistan still have to face lot of pressure and troubles, which may cause delay in restoration of the democracy. The most visible protests are coming from lawyers, judges, media, political parties, and other NGO’s related with human rights. Critics, however, believe Gen Musharraf was acting to pre-empt a judgment by the Supreme Court on whether his re-election last month was legal. Will emergency create more tension and more violence? It never stops people from speculating. We all need to acknowledge the fact that we all are at some extant are responsible for the present situation.

I would like to draw your kind attention towards the youth in Pakistan. Please encourage them and engage with them in this very difficult time. It has been a struggling period. If you search the web pages you will find that youth in Pakistan having massive discussions to regard with the present situation in the country. Hopes are high once again that the state of emergency will solve the existing problems soon.

Kindly uphold Pakistan in your prayers.

Peace

Eric Attique

Chessington Urban Nites: Week 4

After a slow beginning, we have finally begun to get established with Urban NItes in Chessington.

A few weeks ago we met 3 young people near Chessington North Stn and now this Wednesday we met them again with some other guys. We spent time chatting to them and were able to tell them who we are and what we are planning to do in chessington. They were receptive – especially to the idea of hot chocolate and cakes!

Please pray that:
We can get established at a particular location in chessington quickly

respect at rm1

In rm1 we are trying to come up with ‘guidelines’ for the room. We were discussing the importance of rules and what the boys thought we should have as rules. ‘respect your elders’ came up and we were chatting about whether it is any more important to respect people who are older than you than those who are the same age, or whether everyone should be viewed and treated equally.

We were also able to tell the boys that ‘respect your elders’ is from ‘honour your father and mother’- from the bible. It was good to be able to bring this into conversation as It is often hard to bring up ‘god stuff’ in general conversation at rm1.

Please pray for more opportunities to chat about God with the boys and that they’d have more questions for us.
