Suburban Soul: What a great week

Suburban Soul came to end this evening with a closing service and evening banquet at Christchurch New Malden. This week of mission, teaching and social action celebrating God’s world and creation has been great with young people from across Kingston & New Malden’s churches working as project delegates and running a range of projects that have met and engaged with a wide range of people.

In New Malden a family café ran at the Methodist Church (on the High Street) and was full up each afternoon, offering free face painting, crafts and refreshments. Here the delegates met and played with children from across New Malden. Down the road in the United Reformed Church the delegates first visited a couple of retirement homes, singing songs, having conversations with the residents. Then on the Friday they had up to 100 of the people that they met come along to a Tea Dance, where in a counter cultural image, the young and old both ate and danced together.

In Kingston town centre activities radiated out from the Kingston United Reformed Church where a jungle themed kids activity had been put together. Alongside this teams of young people went out on the streets to talk and ask questions people about what in their life they celebrated. The final element of the Kingston Projects saw Oxygen workers building giant mobile phones and ipod’s out of papier-mâché and then walking around Kingston town centre with them, inviting people back to an “odd café” held on the grass of All Saints Church where hot chocolate and conversation was available.

The weeks outreach activities drew together on the Saturday with a Special Families Day at Christchurch. Here many of the kids and family activities that had been run throughout the week repeated, but with a special added extra as in the middle of the day, Rev Stephen Khurt, Vicar of Christchurch led a short service, giving God thanks for what matters in life and also demonstrating to people what matters most to God, ie us.

As I now look back on the week and all the great things that have taken place I do so with a real feeling of encouragement. Not because of who came, or the things that took place, but for the young people from the churches who took part. It was great to see so many young people give up their time, inhibitions and energy in celebrating the life God gave. These young people are not just the church of tomorrow, they are the church of today. They are engaged in lifestyles that many of us can learn from and be inspired by.

Time to Pray....

I travel to many different churches as part of my new role with Oxygen. Whilst at these churches my job is both to encourage and challenge the churches as to what is happening with young people in the area and how they can respond.

Yesterday (21st Oct) I went to

Chessington

Methodist

Church

to let them know about our plans to start Oxygen’s Urban Nites scheme in their area. When I got there however I was me that was encouraged and challenged, for in the Lobby of the church was a banner that the team made in the first 18 months of Oxygen to publicise a week of prayer. It was a great encouragement to see this banner stuck on the wall, obvious to all who came in through the front doors, but it was also a challenge to me that the “success” of Oxygen’s has been down to the bedrock of prayer set down even before it started. Too often in this success driven world we are drawn to focus on outcomes and activity, numbers of attendances, accreditations, conversions or achievements.

The value and unquantifiable value of prayer, came back to me again today when we as a team spent the day in the West Malling Benedictine Convent in

Kent

. Here are a group of 20 ladies aged from 20 to 90, who describe their vocation as working in prayer. Starting at 4am they rise for 8 services per day, in between which they are allocated 2 or 3 hours for personal prayer.

As I spent time in a very

Holy Place

I realised that Oxygen’s step in the next phase of our work needs to learn from these eclectic, welcoming Nuns and base our discipline, focus and energy into working out our calling in prayer.

Hello Oxygen e-shooters and supporters ! Thankyou for all your prayers. Just a few more requests and a brief update ...

I am really enjoying my time at Devonway youth centre thursday nights. We have been trampolining (still recovering from my back flips;) but more importantly having some good conversations and one of the girls has confided with me that she has just started going to church with a friend in Hammersmith and has already asked if we can meet up to pray together!! Please pray that I can connect with her and for opportunities to introduce her to young church goers in the area (starting with Surburban Soul.)

Also, I'm working out the details for Slum Survivor Nov 16-18th. The Oxygen team will be spending the weekend like a billion spend a reality. We would like invite young people and their youth leaders from local churches to join us! Please do pass on the invitation or email back for more info, parental consend forms, a timetable of the weekend etc. Click here for a short video explaining a bit more about the weekend ...

The Global poverty prayer week is an opportunity to join together in prayer for the world’s poor and to pray for the work of our churches responding to poverty. Tearfund's DOUBLE DECKER PRAYER BUS is swinging by Kingston Town centre 2 - 3:30pm Saturday 17th November (just need to confrim the time.) Please make use of this opportunity to be creative, to pray publicly and to engage God about important issues .. also all the slum survivors will be there and am certain we will appreciate encouragement and support from the older church members. Keep an eye on your emails for more info!

Thanks for reading:)
Blessings,

Peter Bazely's update...

Peter Bazely's recap

This week at Rm1(the after school club at Coombe Boys school) we played mafia with the kids, the first round Ana (one of the volunteers) told the story that accompanies the game, this includes stories of how the mafia have been successful at murdering villagers. For the second round K one of the boys asked to play the role of the storyteller, and It was a joy to see him really engage and enjoy making up stories to go with the game. Seeing this was a real encouragement to me, seeing him feel free to be creative. Also it is good to see that God has given this boy the gift of story telling. I look forward to seeing more in other kids, going deeper with them and developing trust with them. I want to have opportunities to talk with them and ask them questions that will leave them thinking about their view of the world and of God.

yours sincerely

Peter Bazely

Update from Tim Worth...

Hi Guys, this is Tim from the Oxygen team. I wanted to send you a short story about some of what we are doing....

Room in Surbiton is going really well. We've spent the past couple of weeks getting to know the boys (and the couple of girls who occasionally come) and we are meeting today (monday) to begin planning some proper activities for the sessions.

We've been constantly praying for oppurtunities to talk to the lads about beliefs and faith and those oppurtunities have been presenting themselves in some of the most unlikely situations such as when we're trying to calm some of them down after fights. a couple of the boys seem to understand more about faith than I do and could already be developing a relationship with God.

Hopefully we'll be able to provide them with oppurtunities for this faith to grow and for the others to start seeing more of what God is really like.

Billy the Kid

My Name is Stephan and I have come from Romania for 3 months to volunteer with Oxygen and learn about youth work in Britain.

As part of my role I have been helping at Rm1, the Coombe Boys School project - getting to know the young people better. Last week I had a good time to talk and share with one of the boys who is 11 who I will call Billy.

Billy and I were playing a board game together. He is always is asking me to play pool, board games or Computer games or something else because he has no friends. On this one evening while Billy and I were playing I looked in a different direction for a moment and he tried to cheat.

As I turned back I saw him trying to cheat so I asked him why are u needed to cheat, he answered because I want to win and be your friend. I was able to take time to tell him that you don’t have to cheat to win; rather you have to work hard and practice. From this Billy and I had a great talk about different parts of his and my life. At the end  he looked at me and said he wanted to try things differently. I want to say that it is great to get to know and talk to young people like Billy. I'm so pleased when I see that they can trust me and talk to me.

Could you continue to pray for Billy and other like him that they would be supported, find some friends and through people us learn more about God and the fact He is with us.
