Anna Nunn ID expereince

I went to ID Hollyfield today. Only 5 of the girls were in. We started off talking about the hopes and dreams of different celebrities in a collage, and about what their hopes and dreams may have been when they were younger, and how they changed as they grew up.

After this we encouraged the girls to share with the rest of the group what their hopes and dreams had been when they were younger. They all contributed to the discussion, and also wanted to know what the leaders' hopes and dreams had been.

It was really nice to know that they were interested in us - it indicated that they want to build their relationships with us. As the conversation progressed, they started talking about the decisions and lifestyle choices they've made in the past, and how they regret some of them, and how they wish things could be different.

The group really opened up to each other; some were even painfully honest with the rest of the group. It was a beautiful, but kinda heartbreaking thing to witness. Each of them shared stories about past relationships, and the way the boys involved had left them feeling. They spoke about their relationships with their parents; a few of the girls said that they wished they could talk to their parents about their lives, but were ashamed of the people they'd become, and didn't want their parents to know.

For the first time, they were honest about how they think other people see them, and their reputation at school amongst the teachers and amongst the other students. Most of them are frustrated about their reputations, and they wish people could understand that there's so much more to them than meets the eye.

The most encouraging thing about today's session was that we were able to show them that it's not too late for them to change their lives.
Most of them really hadn't realised that it was still possible to make a difference to their relationships and their reputations - with some of them it felt almost as though we'd thrown them a lifeline! They each committed to journaling over the next week about some of the feelings and issues today's session brought up.

I really felt like we got through to the girls today. It was such an amazing feeling to know that I've been a part of something that will change their lives. This is EXACTLY what I was hoping to get out of the gap year - I just didn't realise it would happen so soon! =)

I am really enjoying the work at Tolworth girls ID project. I have been to the year 8 group three times now. The girls have obvious needs for support, some more than others, but overall they are sweet and receptive to forming a relationship with me. I am very grateful! I hope that I can help them to become more thoughtful and confident, and show them the love of the Lord.

Carol usually has the group do a thoughtful art/writing project towards the end of group about what they think, or what's important to them, etc. I like to do the project as well, and emphasize my love of the Lord or somehow bring faith into it. I am hoping the girls will notice and ask questions or wonder a bit. Some of the girls have expressed a belief in God, and some have expressed disbelief. Please pray for good opportunities for us to speak truth and show love, and wisdom to take the best advantage of these situations. Thanks!

At the moment I am going to the Korean Club which is having on Monday 5 to 7:30 at Venner centre in Worcester Park. It stopped for a month during the summer, but now the number of people coming is growing, which is great to see this has led me to think about the Korean events, prompting me to ask you for prayer.
  • Would you pray for wisdom in developing new projects, that people would come
  • Pray for also for the Korean Club that is run. They are really nice guys and I'm having a good relationship with them but I want to be more engaged with them.
  • Pray for me as I want to share their difficulties and problems they have.

One of the girls had said to her mum that she couldn’t be grounded because she needed to meet the oxygen workers (that’s commitment) so she arranged to be grounded the next day.

Adding to this when we were leaving, also just a little thing that one of the girls said to me ‘I hope your knees get better’ (short story I got injured playing footy!) the fact she said this showed there was evidence of an early relationship and that we mattered to these teenagers, not bad considering we’ve barley met these guys twice.

Hi, I'm Ki Hyoung - you might know me as John (my English name). As part of my work with Oxygen I'm working at the Rm1 Hollyfield School in Surbiton. You will see from the photos at the moment, there are only a few young people coming.

When those who do come along, we play a board game then cook some food and snacks, before finally do exercise with Wii or the PSP games. Each day we get to know the young people more and more. They then are inviting their friends along, which is great as it helps the club grow.

I'm really pleased that we are getting closer as a team which is great

Carol Clack: ID Worker

Carol Clack has annouced that she feels her time working to Oxygen has come to an end. Cardol started with Oxygen in 2004 and since then she has contributed so so much to the work and life of the workers and young people. We will be sorry to see her go, but she feels, and we agree that God is directing her to something new and even more exciting. Below Carol gives her parting words as she prepares to close this chapter on her life.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After four years as part of the Oxygen team I feel the time has come to move on to something else so at the end of half term I am leaving the Oxygen family. Two of those years were spent as part of the gap year teams and two as part of the senior team. I have met many young people over this time and been involved in a variety of projects from the Vent Café and Cell to Room in Surbiton to ID at Tolworth Girls School. My time at Oxygen has been stimulating, challenging, exciting and my sense of humour has been honed to perfection!!

During my Oxygen time I have:
  • Established ‘mother-care’ i.e. caring for the drunken revelers at the Vent.
  • Become ‘mum’ to a variety of young people – apparently I give really good hugs.
  • Been absolutely amazed that young people would come and sit week after week in front of a church altar and discuss all kinds of life issues with such honesty.
  • Mentored a number of young people who will always have a special place in my heart.
  • Met loads of amazing people from all over the Borough, the country and the world but not the Universe – unless you count God.
  • Grown in my Christian faith and an understanding of who I am in God.
  • Been introduced to Nicholaston House – a retreat center on the Gower in South Wales – Wonderful!
I have no firm plans as to what comes next on my Journey so please pray that I will get a clear idea of what comes next and for God’s provision.
  • Also pray for the ID project at Tolworth Girls for continued favour with the school, the girls who attend ID and for volunteers to work at the project.
  • I shall miss Oxygen but I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to be a part of this great organization.

We would like to pass on the news of the passing of one of Oxygen’s former Gap Year Workers, Sam Irwin.

Australian Sam, as he became known, worked with Oxygen between 2005 & 6 and was on the same team as Adam, Laura, Nadine, Dave, Sam, Wouter, Grace, Andy Malam and Ji Hye. He was found dead from an unknown heart condition last week, and his funeral took place in Australia this weekend.

Sam was a wonderful guy who brought energy, life and spirit to Oxygen. He was responsible for making the Street Pastor Video that was used to launch the scheme in Kingston, and was involved in lots of different weekly projects such as the vent café and urban nites. During this time her formed many great friendships with young people and helpers along the way many of who are devastated at the moment. There will be a memorial service for Sam in the coming weeks here in the UK, but in the meantime could you:

Please pray for Sam’s family at this time of loss. Sam was only in his early 20s and so his passing comes as tragic news
Pray for his friends here in Kingston, many of those who were on the team with him are completely shocked by Sam’s passing

A new oxygen-online.org

New Oxygen Website by you.

A new Oxygen website is on its way! The old Oxygen website was made by Oxygen MIND THE GAP worker Dom Rodger in 2003/4 and has served the last few years of Oxygen well. With Oxygen’s changing work and focus the time had come to update and renew the site. So the old site has been replaced by a site, currently being debugged and filled in, by another former MIND THE GAP Worker, Nathan Larkin.

You can see the current site that is being worked on at www.oxygen-online.org, comments and suggestions appreciated!

Ladette to Lady on the BBC

The number of crimes committed by girls in England and Wales has gone up by 25% in three years - according to figures from the Youth Justice Board. There were reported to be significant increases in the number of minor assaults, robberies, public order offences and criminal damage

Now, Oxygen (Kingston Youth for Christ) in South London, has started work with Hollyfield School Surbiton to try and help young teenage women felt to be especially at risk of falling into lifestyles they may later come to regret. This ladette to lady programme was recently featured on BBC Local Radios, including BBC London, Bristol and Southern Counties Radio.
