Funding stream to support community work

A 130m pound government fund has been set up to support community projects across England. The scheme is designed to support grass roots organisations, and grants of as little as 250 pounds will be available for smaller groups. The Community Development Foundation is running the three-year programme on behalf of the Cabinet Office. The fund will be divided into an 80m pound small grants programme, and a 50m pound endowments programme. This is intended to allow local funders to get matched investment to place in endowments, increasing their ability to provide long-term funding.Third sector minister Phil Hope said: "I want grass roots organisations in our communities to thrive so that they can help with the individual challenges that face each local community

Young Kingston

Young Kingston, an exciting new charitable fund nominated as the Mayor of Kingston's Charity for 2006-7, has been set up by Kingston's Mayor for 2006-7, Cllr Mary Reid and one that Oxygen is about to be involved with. Young Kingston’s aim is to help young people living or going to school in the borough, to make the most of life's opportunities and benefit their local community.

Whether it's providing funding for a local environmental clean-up or a performance about an issue that matters to them or providing talented musicians with funds so they can buy a musical instrument or travel to sporting events for promising sportspeople so they can compete, - we aim to help young people do it for themselves.

The Duveen Trust

The Duveen Trust is a great Trust for young people to consider application. The Trustees wish to consider:

  • Projects of individual initiative by young people where self-help on its own has proved insufficient
  • Organisations administering projects whose aim is to develop individual initiative by young people
  • Applications for educational assistance to enable applicants to work in community projects specialising in the social education of young people
  • Grants towards finite projects or individuals administering them

Grants will only be made to registered charities or to individuals whose grants must be administered by a registered charity. The Trustees are unlikely to make grants in respect of formal education, except for courses leading to a qualification in Youth and Community Work.

vcashpoint’ is the funding for young people aged 16 to 25

vcashpoint’ is the funding initiative for young people aged 16 to 25 in England, who want to set up a volunteering project in their local community. By providing grants of up to £2500, vcashpoint can help young people turn their ideas for volunteering projects into reality!

Round one of vcashpoint launched on Wednesday 28 February and is now closed. Thank you to those who helped young people with their applications. We are now busily assessing all applications and will soon be contacting everyone who applied to tell them the results of the assessments!

Round two of vcashpoint will be up and running in Autumn this year. To make sure you don’t miss out on the next round of vcashpoint applications, 16-25 year olds can register for vcashpoint updates on vinspired. You can also get the latest vcashpoint news by signing up to our vbulletin. In the mean time, you can use the tools below to get young people thinking ‘Outside the Box’.

‘Outside the Box’

To get the creative juices flowing with volunteering project ideas, youth workers across England have been using a brand new limited edition brainstorming kit called ‘Outside the Box’ to help inspire fresh ideas for local volunteering projects. Outside the Box was piloted regionally with a number of youth groups and has proven to be an effective way to engage young people and help them identify potential volunteering project ideas.

The good thing is that it is not essential to have an Outside the Box in order to run an ideas generating session with young people. Download the vinspirer’s notes for an easy step-by-step guide to running your session.

Kingston Borough Grants Available

As part of the Council’s commitment to developing its support for improving the environment, a special fund of £25,000 has been made available for environmental projects in 2007/08. This is in line with the Council’s priority in 2006-10 to ‘introduce grants for environmental groups to help them and the Council make further progress on climate change and recycling, waste minimisation and its implications’

They are inviting applications from voluntary and community organisations for projects which will achieve one or more of the following:

  • Increase environmental knowledge and understanding
  • reduce waste and increase recycling
  • save energy, promote alternative and renewable energy, and cut emissions of carbon dioxide
  • promote the use of public transport, cycling and walking
  • involve the community in environmental action
  • protect and enhance biodiversity and the natural environment
  • maintain or improve natural resources through conservation and sustainable consumption

In addition, work should directly benefit residents of the Royal Borough of Kingston. They are particularly keen to fund collaborative work between organisations and support to small, emerging groups to develop their ideas.

Filling Three Peaks with Oxygen

Oxygen, Kingston YFC is a relatively new Christian Youthwork Project that seeks to give young people the opportunity to discover and follow Jesus. Throughout the six years Oxygen has been I existence it has reached over 3,500 young people with this mission and has been privileged to see young people baptized, small bible groups established and a whole sale change in the way that hundreds of young people relate to God and the church.

Oxygen now operates over 30 projects, has a team of more than 100 volunteers, as well as a team of 8 full time Gap year workers, all of which, up until Jan 2007 was managed by just one full time worker. Therefore to cope with this work, as well Oxygen’s role in administering and overseeing the Street Pastor scheme we have made the bold step of faith of taking on our second full time worker. This step of faith brings a financial challenge and we are looking to raise around £25,000 during this year.

Therefore in July 2007 a team of Oxygen workers and volunteers are setting out to climb the three highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales. This exercise we will undertake in 48 hours non stop, starting in Scotland and finishing in Wales. We still have 2 places left on our team so would you consider joining us so more young people can come to discover and follow Jesus, thank you! For more information on the Oxygen three peaks challenge contact:  Elizabeth Man Rey- nameranon@yahoo.co.uk or 07913 036 074.
