Slum Survivor

During the last weekend of Global poverty prayer week (Nov 12-19th) Oxygen is planning on hosting a Slum survivor weekend. During this time in the Oxygen halls for both young people and their youth leaders from local churches to spend the weekend living a bit like a billion do in reality (Friday 16th evening until Sunday 18th midday, dates for your diary!) There's going to be an Oxygen team slum and we would love to see more of you building your slums with us. A facebook event has been created with more details to follow but expect a challenging experience well worth taking part in and a well deserved lunch at the end:)

Even if people would like to visit for a couple of hours, there will be space and place to pray over some issues raised over the poverty prayer week and opportunity to spend time with the slightly smelly slum survivors! Charming!

To be involved or for more information contact: jennifer.plummer@oxygen-online.org

VOLUNTEERS wanted: WImbledon

Do you love young people and love God?! This could be your opportunity to serve!!

Project: 'Open Room

We want to continue to build genuine relationships with the young people who congregate outside centre court shopping centre and the surrounding area. Our aim is to engage relevantly with the young people through the art of conversation, playing games and giving out free hot drinks. In all of this we will be open about our Christian faith, offering support through prayer with any young people who express an interest. We are there also to be signposts, pointing the young people to any relevant after school activities or youth groups that may be running. We also hope to set up a newsletter or a flyer which we can hand out in post card form, which will list the time & places of relevant activities, as well as important useful information such as connections, child abuse helpline ect.

We are looking to work each session in a team of 4 youth workers, operating between 3:30- 5:30pm beginning on Wednesday & Thursday afternoons. However, we hope to put a team of at least 10 youth workers together, so that we can operate on a rota basis.

If you have a passion to see the love of God communicated through many means to the young people of central Wimbledon, then this could be for you! Whatever you can offer, be it 2 hours, once every 2 weeks or 2 hours, 2 afternoons a week, we would love for you to be a part of the team!

Resource Information

Each week, as part of the YFC network Rob Ryan sends out an email with news and information. This weeks I think has some good stuff for many people to use, so I have copied and pasted what he sent....

The talks form the national church planting conference have been uploaded as free mp3's - some are worth listening to - particularly session 3 from George lings.

20th November is Pray Day - which of those of you involved in schools work may be interested in.

Ian (Oxford DYO) runs a great blog which points to timschmoyer.com this week as a great resource for youth ministry. On Friday Tim posted this excellent resource of free worship backgrounds for power point. There is other good stuff there too.

Young People just dont believe anymore....

A recent poll has found that a worrying 43 percent of U.K. teenagers say they have no religion or faith.

The Ipsos MORI poll, commissioned by the British Library, found that non-belief was widespread among teenagers, although trends varied across age groups.Across all age categories, the findings revealed that 21 percent of all those polled said they had no religion or faith. The poll revealed a direct correlation between age and levels of faith, with an increase in age corresponding to an increase in the number professing faith. Out of those in their 20s who were polled, just 20 percent answered that they had no faith. In the 65 and above age category, just 8 percent responded that they had no religion or faith.
