UN JOINT YOUTH PROGRAMME MANAGER

UN JOINT YOUTH PROGRAMME MANAGER
Location : Kabul, AFGHANISTAN
Application Deadline : 31-Jan-07
Languages Required : English
Starting Date : 28-Feb-2007
Duration of Initial Contract : Six Months (re-newable)

68% of the population of Afghanistan is below 25 years of age. This enormous reservoir of human capital will provide the future leaders of the country's political, business and civil arena. But Afghan youth are at a major risk of alienation, unemployment, exploitation and abuses.

In this context, the Government of Afghanistan (Ministry of Culture and Youth, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Higher Education, Ministry of Public Health, Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development, Ministry of Womens Affairs, Ministry of Justice) and the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and UN agencies including UNDP, UNICEF, UN-HABITAT, UNESCO, UNV, UNFPA and UNOCHA-IRIN have decided to initiate the National Youth Programme, which is a UN Joint Programme on Youth, coordinated by the Ministry of Culture & Youth and UNDP.

The main objective of the programme is to engage the Afghan youth in governance, democracy, social-political processes and enhance their participation in community development and nation-building. The programme will also provide educational opportunities for marginalized youth and encourage skills development to enhance future employment opportunities. There will also be strong emphasis on gender and volunteerism, which are both mainstreamed throughout the programme.

The National Youth Programme will consist of the following components:
-- Strengthening the capacity of the Government to respond to the needs of the youth of the country.
-- Promoting non-formal education, increasing awareness and developing skills in young people so to provide better quality of life and livelihood opportunities.
-- Engaging youth in governance, development and social-political processes at local, district, municipal, provincial and national level, ensuring the participation of young women and men in democracy and advocacy.
-- Promoting volunteerism for peace and development and establishing a youth volunteer corps for Afghanistan.

Thanks to Jonny Baker, calculate what you actual carbon footprint is - this is a really good piece in today's guardian which enables you to roughly calculate what your carbon footprint is. it might be worth doing it with a group and talking about it, and dreaming ways to lessen it? i haven't calculated mine yet as i don't have the bills etc to hand.

New Bible Study Course Starting

Rob Dingman, from Calvary Chapel Twickenham is planning to offer a Study and Teach course in February and March which may interest you. Here's how Rob describes it.

“It's important for believers to be in the Bible as a lifestyle. All of our service to the Lord, all of our growth in our Christian walk, our peace and joy, will come out of our knowledge of the Bible. Jesus said in John 14:23, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home in him." Our experiencing Jesus in our lives will come as a result of keeping His word. Practically speaking, it means we should be able to study, meditate upon, and teach others the Bible.

Study means to go from lesser knowledge to greater knowledge about something by means of observation. We can't grow in our service or our peace and joy if we don't understand what we are reading. So study will enable us to accurately dig the meaning out of Scripture so we can grow in knowledge. We will learn to observe the text, interpret it, and apply it, through asking questions and also using reference materials.

After we study, the next thing we can do is meditate on what we learn. Meditation on the Scriptures is how we digest the knowledge and write it upon our hearts, so that it becomes a part of us. God intends for our minds to be renewed by knowing Him, and as a result, our lives to be transformed.

We will be greatly benefited by learning how to study and how to meditate. The next step will be to pass on to others what we have learned and meditated upon. Not everyone is specifically called to a teaching ministry, but it will be good to learn practically how to accurately deliver the message we have accurately dug out of Scripture.

Everyone and anyone is invited to take part. If you know someone who would be interested in this course, feel free to copy this e-mail to them.

• The course will be taught on eight Saturday nights from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm (Feb 3, 10, 17, 24, Mar 3, 10, 17, 24). There might be a slight re-scheduling occuring in March. I have tentatively agreed to do a short version of this course for some Iraqi pastors in Istanbul , in March. This may or may not take place, so we may not have to re- schedule. Blessed are the flexible, for they shall not be broken.

• Venue: Hampton Methodist Church on Percy Road .

• Cost: £16 per person, to cover the costs for the venue.

• Each person will be required to buy two books:

Living By The Book, by Howard Hendricks and William Hendricks The Practice of Biblical Meditation, by Campbell McAlpine.

If you intend to take the class, order them as soon as possible.

• Each student will have reading and homework assigned including preparing small studies to be delivered during class times. You will learn best by doing.

If you are interested in being involved, or have questions then e-mail Rob at: rob@calvarychapeltwickenham.com

Filling Three Peaks with Oxygen

Oxygen, Kingston YFC is a relatively new Christian Youthwork Project that seeks to give young people the opportunity to discover and follow Jesus. Throughout the six years Oxygen has been I existence it has reached over 3,500 young people with this mission and has been privileged to see young people baptized, small bible groups established and a whole sale change in the way that hundreds of young people relate to God and the church.

Oxygen now operates over 30 projects, has a team of more than 100 volunteers, as well as a team of 8 full time Gap year workers, all of which, up until Jan 2007 was managed by just one full time worker. Therefore to cope with this work, as well Oxygen’s role in administering and overseeing the Street Pastor scheme we have made the bold step of faith of taking on our second full time worker. This step of faith brings a financial challenge and we are looking to raise around £25,000 during this year.

Therefore in July 2007 a team of Oxygen workers and volunteers are setting out to climb the three highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales. This exercise we will undertake in 48 hours non stop, starting in Scotland and finishing in Wales. We still have 2 places left on our team so would you consider joining us so more young people can come to discover and follow Jesus, thank you! For more information on the Oxygen three peaks challenge contact:  Elizabeth Man Rey- nameranon@yahoo.co.uk or 07913 036 074.
