Sacred Space Kingston: Interactive Art & Spirituality

Sacred Space Kingston was born as an art and spirituality exhibition in All Saints, Kingston Marketplace developed in response to the phenomenal interest of people wanting prayer and answers to spiritual questions at the annual Kingston Green Fair. Those involved in organising prayer at the fare, knew there had to be a new ways to engage with those who have an interest in the spiritual but who all to readily dismiss Christianity

Sacred Space Kingston now occurs about 3 times a year and is organised by representatives from St Pauls - Kingston Hill, Kingston URC, The Community Church - Surbiton, Kingston and Surbiton YMCA, Oxygen and All Saints. Each event has taken a different theme and explored it through art and reflective stations to challenge and provoke people's thinking about faith and its relevance to everyday life. So far Sacred Space has brough together people to look at issues of identity, peace and reconciliation and love and dreams. from September we will be starting an 'Artist's Way' course which is a 12 week course on unlocking your creativity, then again in Septmeber, with Kingston Council a series of events will be run to mark Kingston's contribution to London Week for Peace between 15th and 21st September.

IN future Sacred Space Kingston hopes to start running a book club and occasional movie nights to discuss issues of faith and morality raised in our popular culture. the ultimate aim is to create new and revisit some traditional ways to worship where people can bring and share the fruit of our creativity as well as bring questions to God to others on a similar journey.

Sacred Space Dreams: Feb 5th - 10th 2008

When you were a child I wonder what it was that you dreamed of becoming? For you was life as an adult to be filled with fame and celebrity when as a talented footballer you scored the winning goal, or as a rock singer you performed to millions. Maybe your dreams were inspired by nobler ambitions that saw you wanting to be a crime busting policeman or a truth seeking journalist.

As we move from our childlike dreams and ambitions our lives take many twists and turns, some driven by fear, many more by love for a particular way of life. During these years dreams are both broken and fulfilled. In this process of breaking and forming we often unearth that which is most important to us, that which we love the most.

In this, the third Sacred Space Kingston installation, we are offering a chance for you to come and explore through a number of interactive art installations the topic of “where love and dreams collide”. We want to create a safe place where with the help of the on site art installations people can explore their shattered dreams, lost hopes and broken hearts. Then putting behind you all that has gone before space is created to unearth your deeper life loves, finding out that which matters most. The final installation offers a place where you can then place your dreams for the future in front of the altar as an act of reflection and prayer.

Sacred Space Kingston: Peace

In a world of violence and pain, where people are both victim and perpetrator, peace seems an impossible hope. Yet it is only through peace in listening, forgiving and accommodating others that wrongs can be righted and harmony with our environment and humankind can be restored.

The annual London Week for Peace is a city wide initiative with each of the London Boroughs participating by holding events to demonstrate our shared humanity and our need for people of different culture and beliefs to work together to build lasting peace both in this country and across the world.

Sacred Space Kingston starts tonight with a candlelit vigil in the market place in Kingston at 7pm with people from across the churches and different faiths. It continues with an art and spirituality exhibition at All Saints Church near the Market Place featuring works of art by local adults and children. It will also include interactive elements to give the opportunity for reflection and a response to personal and global issues of peace, reconciliation and freedom. It runs from the evening of the 11th Sept to Sunday 16th and will be open daily from 10am until 4pm.

Sadly the meeting on Thursday at Borders has had to be be cancelled as the Canon Andrew White has been recalled to Baghdad.
