Youth, Culture and Mission Lectures March 2010

Theme: Gender with Dr Elaine Storkey, Dr Kristin Aune, Andy Burns, Lois Gallagher and James Hawes.

YCML have teamed up with East to West, the Diocese of Winchester and LICC to host an annual day of lectures for those who are interested in pursuing a deeper, theological and grounded understanding of youth, culture and mission. Aimed at those who have studied theology or youth ministry at degree or postgraduate level, this day will also be stimulating for all those who want to engage with key issues in youth ministry. There'll be three sessions during the day on what the Bible says about gender, the latest research into gender and the practical implications of all that on working with boys and working with girls.

The lectures are happening twice: in London on 18 March 2010 and in Leeds on 25 March 2010. Cost £30 to include lunch. More details at www.ycml.org.uk. Put the date in your diary and book your ticket!

Welcome to Kingston University

Welcome to Kingston University and what we hope will be an inspiring, exciting and informative few years of University. Kingston is a great place to live and study. It caters to almost every need with places you can go and chill out such as Richmond Park or alongside the River Thames, hundreds of locations where you can gain some retails therapy as well as a great and varied nightlife.

Kingston is also home to a wide range of churches. They range in style, denomination and location but what they have in common is their desire to welcome you as students to this part of South West London. We have asked each of the churches locally to introduce themselves to you, writing a short introduction to them, their service times and how you can get in touch with them. We have put those together in a booklet which is available to download from here

Christmas in Kingston

Christmas is coming and the goose is getting fat, or so goes the old Christmas tune. If you are a student at Kingston University in 2008, Christmas isn’t best summed up by a fattening bird but rather by a range of emotions.

Firstly for those returning home after their first term away from home, Christmas is a time of home cooking, catching up with old friends and getting some clean clothes! For other students, away from home or not looking forward to that return visit, the Christmas celebrations only come to represent what they are missing out on, providing a reminder to what others have that they don’t.

There is another Christmas story, one that draws together those two strands in one moment of both vulnerability and hope. This is a tale of a baby in a manger, a baby who was the son of God, that had taken himself to the margins to be born amongst a poor and broken people but in so doing brought a new hope as he paved the way for God and Man to be brought back together in a wonderful new kind of life.

This month, this Christmas story of vulnerability and hope will be talked about celebrated in churches across Kingston Borough. It will be brought alive in traditional and modern songs, shared in words through candles and represented by loving kindness. Then on Christmas day, for those students without somewhere else to go, it will be represented by the churches who are themselves offering lunch and friendship to any students left in Kingston whilst others have returned home.

So instead of waiting for the goose to get fat this Christmas, why don’t you take time to go and take part in the Christmas story at a church near you. Walk This Way: One day conference

Walk This Way is a one day conference which will examine how Jesus taught and how we learn and will include input from, amongst others:

• Prof Richard Bauckham, one of the world's leading New Testament Theologians on how Jesus taught
• Prof John West-Burnham, a leading authority and pioneer in personalised learning and the role of education in society
• Dr Rebecca Nye, who will bring a different dynamic to the day as she invites delegates to get involved in Godly Play
• Prof Alister McGrath, Head of the Centre for Theology at King's College London, who will be looking at how we take learning to new levels in the church.

This a fantastic opportunity for people involved in working with young people to find out more about the teaching methods employed by Jesus, models of best practice from church history and up to the minute developments in educational theory as well as discovering ways to teach that will really reach young people.

Welcome to Kingston: Curry

This Sunday saw the wantachurch Kingston Universtiy Fresher Fare 'Big Free Curry'. This free food welcome event was arranged by the churches of Kingston Borough to welcome students from Kingston University to Kingston. Through this joint churches event, attended by around 30 students, and the presence at the fresher fare where they met thousands more students, the team had a chance to chat to the team about life, faith and belief. In the process they also gathered around 500 student email addresses, these students will be contacted once a term between now and the end of the year so that they can hear about special church sevices and other christian events being run locally. Invitation to KIngston's Big Curry

You are invited at 1.30pm on Sunday 5th October to Kingston United Reformed Church (Eden St, Kingston, KT1 1HZ ) for 'Kingston's Big Curry' brought to you by churches across Kingston Borough. This event, run in partnership with Kingston University Chaplaincy, is being run to welcome you to Kingston and introduce you to some of the Christians groups and events run locally. You are welcome to come and stay as long as you want, chat to the people who are around, or simply eat some curry and head off into Kingston for the rest of your Sunday!

Kingston United Reformed Church is located at the heart of Kingston-upon-Thames, very near the main shopping centre and five minutes walk from both the railway and bus stations. See a map of their location here.

We do hope you are able to to make it along on the 5th as we know this is set to be a great event. To help us with catering for the event would you reply to info@wantachurch.org.uk with answers to the following questions:

Sacred Space Kingston, Peace: Open All week

The London Week of Peace 2008 is a celebration of young people and their role in the community. Sacred Space Kingston has an exhibition of interactive art, provoking spirituality which will be open at All Saints Church, Kingston between Tues 16th and Sat 20th from 10 - 4pm.
